Description
Sylvan’s Great Lakes Freighter is patterned after a St. Lawrence “canaller”. While canallers have the look of a typical freighter, they were much shorter, as their size was restricted by the locks on the St. Lawrence River prior to the Seaway opening in 1959.
This is an ideal prototype, as no selective compression is required to have a “layout” sized boat. It is also suitable for most modeling eras, as these boats sailed from the turn of the century, with some surviving up into the early 1980’s. Common commodities for these boats would include coal, grain, cement, and iron ore.
Kit includes all parts, fittings, and accessories for a complete model, including etched brass stanchions, and a fully detailed wheelhouse interior. Main structural assembly is simplified by the use of one piece castings. Model measures 36″ in length and 6″ wide, representing a 258′ long freighter. Additional mid-sections (described below) are available separately for those who require a longer boat.
