Description

The mass-produced 310′ Wickes-class destroyers stemmed from the Naval Appropriation Act of 29 August 1916, which called for a navy “second to none,” capable of protecting both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The basic requirement for the class was a possible speed of 35 knots.

This class of destroyers was reknown throughout two wars, and included the following: The four-piper U.S.S. WARD was the first American ship to sink an enemy vessel in WWII. Her sister ship, U.S.S. REUBEN JAMES, was the first U.S. destroyer lost in action. H.M.S. CAMPBELLTOWN rammed the dry dock gates in the dramatic raid on St. Nazaire. Of the 273 four-pipers built, no two were precisely the same, even though their distinctive silhouette make them unmistakable.
